Research shows that Primary 1 students usually have difficulties adapting to the new environment and the primary school English programme in school.

According to the Education Bureau (EDB), the new Kindergarten Education Curriculum Guide suggests that all early childhood education institutions should not force Nursery level (K1) children to practice writing. It is further recommended that both schools of Lower level (K2) and Upper level (K3) should not start teaching vocabulary and calculation by way of rewriting exercises, and also not to evaluate them by written examinations. This is intended to ease the pressure and burden on children and to cultivate their interest in learning through games and exploration. However, it undeniably reduces children’s suitability to the primary school English curriculum. The common weaknesses of newly enrolled primary school students are inability to write and pronounce all 26 English alphabets (in upper and lower cases), unable to read and write a full sentence, lacking of vocabulary knowledge, comprehension and communication skills, etc.

When the children are not equipped with the necessary skills that primary school English curriculum requires, they will not acquire good results in dictations, tests and examinations. As a consequence it will definitely reduce the children’s self-confidence, pilling up pressure on both parents and children and inevitably reduce children’s interest in learning English.

The Primary 1 English Preparation Course aims at cementing students’ English fundamentals and equipping them with the necessary skill-sets and familiarity of the P1 English curriculum. The programme will focus on developing five major skills-sets to best achieve fluency in English - Grammar, Writing, Reading, Listening and Speaking.
