Mathematics Problem Solving

Overview

As innovation and technology are being increasingly recognised as the locomotive to drive sustainable development and solve complex global challenges, Mathematics is vital in everyday life. Mathematics pervades all aspects of life. It is not possible to live in the modern world without making some use of mathematics. Mathematics has a number of very useful benefits to our mind. It develops our reasoning, helps us to have an analytical thinking, quickens our mind, generates practicality and also its use can be applied in the day to day.

Mathematics is present in our daily lives. For many students, math is boring, abstract, lacking in creativity, complex and very difficult to understand, hence the typical expressions of “I am of letters” or “Numbers are not mine.” However, it is a subject that is part of the study of our children and as such should be an effort for compression, which usually involves constant practice.

Learning mathematics has a few benefits:

 

(i) Learning Mathematics is good for your brain:

Research indicates that children who know mathematics are able to recruit certain brain regions more reliably, and have greater gray matter volume in those regions, than those who perform more poorly in mathematics. The brain regions involved in higher math skills in high-performing children were associated with various cognitive tasks involving visual attention and decision-making. While correlation may not imply causation, it is indicated that the same brain regions that help you do math are recruited in decision-making and attentional processes.

 

(ii) Math help us have better problem-solving skills:

Math helps us think analytically and have better reasoning abilities. Analytical thinking refers to the ability to think critically about the world around us. Reasoning is our ability to think locally about a situation. Analytical and reasoning skills are important because they help us solve problems and look for solutions. We could define it as the thought directed to decompose the arguments in its premises or expressions that compose it, to see the relations that exist between them and their conclusion, in order to judge its veracity or reliability of the same. This is what we do when we do a mathematical problem: collect the data, break down its premises, observe the relations that keep or systematically solve their parts in a rational way. If we are able to understand mathematics and arrive at logical solutions, we will be able to prepare our minds when we have real problems. We can look for the best logic, see the possible solutions and relate the data we have to reach the conclusion. There are truths that we try to look for and that are based on the evidences and not on the emotions. It is a thought that allows us to be alert for error both ourselves and others, to deception and manipulation. This is possible because mathematics allows us to reason clearly and logically, taking into account real data and that can be verified.

 

The Mathematics Programme aims at cementing students’ Mathematics fundamentals and equipping them with the necessary skill-sets and familiarity of the Hong Kong Primary School Mathematics curriculum. Students will build confidence and positive attitudes towards Mathematics learning. The will develop the capabilities for learning how to learn and to think logically, creatively and critically.  Students will value on the intellectual endeavor and the mode of thinking rather than repetitive practice and memorizing.
